The Morphou Co-Operative Credit Society Company was founded in 1927 by a 20-member group of progressive local people in condition of poverty and exploitation.
In these years in Morphou but also throughout Cyprus usury and human exploitation were prevalent.
These pioneers in Morphou and those who followed them, having grasped the idea and spirit of the Co-operative movement “One for all and everybody for each one” laid the foundations of the Morphou Co-op Company.
From the first years of its life, the Morphou Coop accepted deposits and granted loans to its members. It helped the local farmers by providing fertilizers and pesticides but also protected them from exploitation. It also financed minor Co-op organizations (S.O.D.E.M Ltd) for the trading of agricultural products, mainly citrus fruit.
In the field of consumption the Morphou Co-op financed the Morphou supermarket with the aim of defining prices and providing goods to both members and non-members. It financed S.O.D.E.M Ltd the creation of a packaging factory for the export of citrus fruit and a factory of citrus juice.
The Morphou Co-op Company was recognized as the biggest Co-op company in Cyprus before 1974 and one of the biggest financial organizations in Morphou.
The Morphou Co-op was the first in Cyprus to provide cheque books to its members and the first to establish current accounts.
Today we are very grateful to all past members of committees of our company and they are all worthy of our praise for their generous and invaluable services.
Our main concern has always been the occupation of our town and the occupation of 40% of our island by Turkish troops. Equally important for us is to meet the basic needs of simple people which include the acquisition of shelter (personal or professional), securing the basic means for a proper life and fulfilling their goals and aspirations. |
